25th of October 2009

I suffered from a terrible flu.. I am not sure if it was a swine one or not. I am not used to have flus so this is a unique experience in that sense.
Right now I am recovering very well.
first weekend I don't meet Sofia. It feels a little bit strange, but we have agreed 1-2 months ago that this weekend she will spend with her friend together...

26th of Septermber, 2009

Soon it has been two months that we have been together with Sofia...
This weekend will be a nice one - once again.
At this point of time I am not going to tell too much since all is ahead. ;)

Today, I've been working and basically that's it. It is sad that I don't have courses enough.. I think I could easily take 2-3 more courses - and I am motivated to study more, too.
I will take a Master's course this fall. It will be all about Microecnomics (read: mathematics).. It is a huge course - double the size we usually have - it will be a 9-points' course.
But today afternoon I will be having Honey here with me. <3

21st of September 2009

The life is full of choices one has to make.
In a small scale of a human it is wether you buy a bottle of milk or not in a grocery store.
In a medium size scale of a human it is wether to do a task today or tomorrow. It is easy to postpone things to the future..
And in a large scale of an individual it is a choice wether to study or work for instance.
Today I made a medium size choice to participate to Bachelor's group that had compulsory presence requirement at the same time I should be in Swedish class which as well had a compulsory presence requirement.. No can do since I don't have a double personality so I am able to participate in one class at a time only.
Today, stock markets went slightly down. We have had enourmous rallies after enormous drop, however, Helsinki stock exchange is only 50 % from its previous highs.
Probably we might see a slight correction movement in stock markets.. If so, it has not been a profitable millenium for stock investors if we exclude dividend yields. However, in USD gold has roughly over tripled during the same period as stocks have been in a long bear markets.

Then, from the financial point of view to my personal level,I was supposed to have the most beautiful girl here as my guest during the weekend but she was disabled since she was thinking she had angina spectoris.. So, I went at her place (after all, she was healthy).. However, we had fantastic time together, watched a movie, chatted and a lot of huggings and kisses were associated to our previous weekend. <3

I wish all my readers all the best! May the Lord bless you in these very last days!

14th of September, 2009

Today, I've arrived from my Honey in the morning. We had a lot of "action" during our weekend. The hottest piece of news was our misreading of the timetables of the bus.. First we looked that the last bus shall leave at quarter to eleven in the evening.. But, it wasn't so.. So, we went back at Sofia's place and slept over the night there.
Then, in the morning I was able to catch the bus.. :)

And of course, we had a lot of good time at Honey's place. We had nice time together, playing with cards, making magic tricks with those cards and then of course our common "quality time". :)

Today, I started the necessary sessions for the Bachelor's thesis.. Everything should be finished by 31.5.2009 (oral presentations, opposings etc.), however I believe it will be ready far before that date.

12th of September 2009

I am glad to visit tomorrow at my Honey's place. I am very much looking forward to having a great time with her. :) I consider it as my hobby to love her. She really is a blessing for my life.

Preparations for the worst

I've watched today some interesting videos on YouTube concerning on preparation for the exceptional times/moments such as war.
I don't know how many people have prepared for this kind of random events - especially in Europe. I know that there are some folks (Mormons) in Utah that are storing food, toilet paper, shampoo, soap, water etc.

This kind of preparation might be wise in two senses: you always need those items and the prices of them tend to raise from year to year so you can see it as an investment to hedge your future. Secondly, if the worst really happens you don't need to regret that you have been prepared well for it.

Thus, I thought to start stockpiling food... For me personally this is good also because I usually have to throw away food since I've been not able to eat all my food supplies before their expiring dates - so can goods are just perfect for a person like me anyway.
So, my plan is to start buying cans of crushed pineapples, peaches, bags of rice, wheat and rye, spices, toilet papers (usually you get a discount if you buy a lot at one time), soaps and shampoos.

The idea of storing food and preparing for the worst scenario is very Biblical. In the first books of the Bible there is a story of Joseph who stored wheat during the seven good years for the upcoming seven bad years.

8th of September, 2009

Today I was reading quite a bit of economy and I noticed that the other economists are following my lead to start speaking about the economic recovery.
Last Shabbath as I visited at Pietarsaari Pentecostal Church the fellows there challenged my views with Niinistö's mention about that the worst is still to come (Niinistö is well respected policy maker - a former (political) minister in Finland). My response was just simply: "Niinistö is a lawyer, not an economist".. Then as I got back home I read what Niinistö said exactly.. He did say that the PUBLIC economy has the worst still to come. I agree in this with Niinistö since the government borrowed money so heavily and now we need to start paying back it.
My portfolio is cyclical strongly so I've been making quite nice stashes of cash over the last few weeks especially.
Then, working and of course, having the best phone call of the day with honey. 1 hour is easily spoken per day. :)

6th of September 2009

This weekend was a special one when it comes to my relationship: one month is full being with Sofia and decades ahead. :)
The longer I know her the sweeter she becomes. :) You know, it takes some time to fall in love in my case.
We are telephoning each other and meeting during the weekends.. Always I miss her a lot just before meeting and she is in my thoughs - wether I recognize it or not - all the time.
Soon I will take a shower and thus prepare for the challenges of next week and starting to look forward to next weekend. ;)

God bless!

4th of September, 2009

I am excited about tomorrow...
Not only because it is Shabbath day but also because I am going to meet the most attractive young woman. :)
Tomorrow will be spent mainly in Pietarsaari and probably I am back in Vaasa on Sunday afternoon/evening so try not to hesitate too much for updates. ;)

I wish my readers nice and warm weekend. Try to spend it with the people you love. :)

3rd of September, 2009

I just arrived back from Helsinki.
I was planning to take a bus from Helsinki back to Vaasa but I changed my mind as I saw that the ticket was more expensive than they advertised at matkahuolto (a ticket booking organization/company).
Here I am, emptying the mail box from all the newspapers from the previos week, just ate a couple chicken nuggets with a little bit fries.
Helsinki was nice as usual, and I got a flu as usual... :D
I found a couple of nice silver coins from Espoo (the neighboring city to Helsinki)..
Then, I found also a street that is named according to my Darling; Sofiankatu (=Sofia's street).

I wish good night everything, and have a nice autumn time from Vaasa!

26th of August 2009

It is probably 27th of August as I am publishing this..
I was working today and made my timetable for this school year.
I've picked up a nice course from Master's studies - Microeconomics 2.
Then I applied for language course and picked up a couple courses from finances.

Then I spent my evening in working and of course, having the loveliest phone call in the last phone call of the evening - with my Love. :)

Probably I will read some Bible this evening before going to sleep (I haven't been reading it almost at all during the past couple of years)..

Good night Finland - and the rest of the world! :)

China's rise to energy consumer

I was inspired today by the editorial of Helsingin Sanomat (the Finland's major paper).
It was written on China's willingness of acquiring world's natural resources.

As China announced her willingness to get rid of U.S. dollars, she has been active in bidding raw materials and energy.

In future, China will be playing a major role in world's economy and how the pizza will be shared.

As the energy based on oil will be more scarce, economies in the world need to invest more heavily in wind energy, water energy etc.
As the technology of solar energy is higher developed, it will open new business opportunities for small companies. Solar energy is nowdays definetely underused due to the fact of under-developed technology.
Hopefully in 5-10 years the situation is different from today...

23rd of August 2009

I am feeling now very good. I had such a good time during this weekend with my honey.
We made some good food, watched a couple of movies, walked outside, hugged and kissed. :)
Absolutely wonderful. We are noticing that we are getting our "own language" as well. :)
Now we both are relaxed for next week (now we need just to talk on phone since she is busy with her school and I am busy with my work these days).
We are very much looking forward to next weekend when there will be a nice trip to the most beautiful place in Finland - Keuruu. I try to shoot some photos with my brand new Nokia Mobile phone, buy a cable and upload here so you guys are able to see that place.

God bless!

P.S. As I might have mentioned, I forgot the digital camera + USB cable to Helsinki but I'll get it probably in two weeks so you guys are able so see some nice photos from the land of Mountains and Oil Fountains. :)

21st of August 2009

I have been cleaning my appartment, washed laundry and soon eating some pizza.
After eating pizza probably I will take a shower and go to work.
After working, I need to do some shoppings for tomorrow. Tomorrow is a special day since I have a beautiful guest here, my dear girl friend.
Probably we will walk a little bit outdoors and watch a movie... I am not sure yet which movie but at least I have a little idea about it... ;)

7th of August 2009

I started working this week again... Last time I was working was in December 2008. I am very excited about this since I had such a nice break.
I was able to do things I have done never before like having a student exchange.

Also, this year have been a blessing for me spiritually as well.. I've re-found some truths from youth when I was more into the spiritual things. (BTW. I am not old now but I like to consider myself mature though because I am mature - simple as that).

An interesting Company from Helsinki Stock Exchange

I've been following up one small company from Helsinki Stock Exchange (or NASDAQ OMX Helsinki).
This company is called Revenio Group. Let me introduce the company a little bit:
First, the financial part, Revenio has equity 0,23 euros/share, dividend 0,02 euros/share, share price is only 0,30 euros currently. The profit from 2008: 0,02 euros/share.

Second a very important aspect as well...
The management owns remarkable amount of the shares which is extremely good thing since the interest of management equals to the interest of average share holder.

Third, general information on the company.. It runs with niche strategy so it is working in many fields (contact center, manufacturing/designing led lights for gas stations etc. translation and so on. For further information: http://www.reveniogroup.fi/en

I don't recommend to buy it necessarily but this company is a worthwhile to be checked and followed especially because of the low stock price..

I wish you a good day!

July 26th 2009

It has passed a long time since I updated my blog for the last time..
My project "Bachelor's thesis" is running well and I am basically happy for my life these days.
I've started to bicycle to lose a few kilos in the mean time to get to know a little bit more Vaasa. This is extremely beautiful city when you walk by the seashore. I love sea and ocean. I've spent most of my life close to sea so I have learned to love it.
The economic situation in Finland is still hard despite the fact that the unemployment rate declined a little from last month. The unemployment is still close to 10 %... If they get the exports running well we start seeing this number decline.. So, in this sense I am looking very much forward to the higher oil prices (Russia is a remarkable trading partner with Finland).
I've been walking around second hand shops and tried find some collectors items for reasonable prices.. I've found same. :) Perhpaps I will get a little company running along this sector. It will not a gold mine but still a few cents here and there is nice addition. :) To run a business is kind of hobby for me more than a serious money making machine. I find entrepreneurship and small businesses interesting.
But, step 1 is to find a stock of items to sell out and I am in this process currently. So, if you have something collectors items for sale, just let me know. ;)

Economic Update

Seems that the bull rally that lasted from March until June has ended. This depression will not be easy for USA, the budget deficit and increasing foreign debt makes it impossible for USA to recover any time soon.
In Finland, we are seeing some good signs for recovery although this may not be the end of depression yet. The good sign that I want to point out is the surplus of balance of trade. However, it is remarkable smaller than a year ago, but definetely a good sign..

17th of May, 2009

It is a National day.. Norwegians seems to celebrate this day very well.. Boys/men were wearing suits and girls/women national clothes.
In Finland, the climax of Indepence day is to watch on TV the parties in the palace of President but here, people really go out and have fun - without alcohol (or just a little alcohol only).
Norway is among those very few peoples in Europe that is independent... Most of the European governments have surrendered their indepence to the European Parlament.

Back to business... I was hanging out a little while, watching the people in downtown and then I decided to participate to the musical "The Covenant" in local Filadelfia. The church was almost full, mostly young people.
The musical was about the history of Israel and Jewish people how they have survived miracously from tough periods.

David Ben Gurion, ex-prime minister of Israel said: "The one who doesn't believe in miracles is not a realist".. At least this can be said about the Israeli people when you study her history.

Congratulations Norway

Norway got her gift for the honor of their National Day: They won Eurovision song contest and Finland was the last one in this competition.
Finland has no tradition of having good success in Eurovisions. Only once we have won, usually among the last ones...
Norwegian song was kind of traditional folk song with folk dance.. And Finland's one was the same crap you see on MTV all the time.

Norway is a great country with friendly people (at least those I've met/was been in touch). There is a clisee that goes: "Money doesn't make you happy". Apparently this is not true here in Norway. People have high income and they seem to be happy - at least as far as I can read people..
I would say that money alone doesn't make a person happy. My logic goes like this:
When you don't have money, you are worried about tomorrow. When you are worried about tomorrow, it causes you sicknesses and stress. You are not happy.
However, you can be rich but still money alone doesn't give you everything you need.

16th of May, 2009

I am back from Oslo, actually it was a day trip. However, I am planning to stay a few more days there right before I will leave this beautiful country.
My very first impression was that it was an ugly city. I didn't visit basically anywhere, so this is not my final conclusion and I am sure that I will love Oslo in three weeks. ;)
Why my first impression is so negative? The answear: The bus took me by the port side and this area reminded me from Tallinn suburban area.. Also, the railway station was full of all kind of suspicious people (drug addicts etc.) despite there was polices.. I think they don't do everything they can to clean it from drugs.
If I compare Kristiansand, Stavanger and Oslo with each other, Stavanger is absolutely the most beautiful from these. The downtown is clean, there is a nice church build on the rock, and my favorite is the fountain in the middle of the downtown of Stavanger.
Krisitansand takes the second place. I am glad that I chose this city. This is very different from Helsinki or from the cities in Finland that I know because of wooden houses. It seems that most of the houses in the downtown are built of wood. Also there are some nice big residences by the river side.
Oslo has the third place because I don't know enough the advantages of Oslo.... I am going to write something about Oslo more in the future, deal? :)

Tomorrow is the National day of Norway, today is Saturday (or Shabbath) and the weather is so beautiful once again. I think I will head outdoors today. :)

By the way, I am going to add some photos when I get back to Finland because I forgot the cable of my digital camera to Finland.. So you need to waite a few more weeks for the photos.

Tomorrow, on National Day there is some kind of musical etc. in Filadelfia and perhaps I will go there in the evening. The name of this musical/film or whatever :) is "Covenant"...

Have a nice day,
- Jarmo

Spring, economy and the most important issues in life

Beautiful morning in Kristiansand. The sun is rising, and I feel so happy because of the nature.
Finnish macro economy is in deep depression. Finland's economy is heavily dependent on exports (mainly high-tech field) and as we all have read from news that the international demand for Finland's exports has cut off almost totally.
The government has issued a lot of debt, old people are going to be retired. I am afraid my generation in Finland face high taxes...
This being said, I am getting more convinced to start a small business in order to start generating a continual cash-flow. I do have some savings to get it started... Perhaps one day it will be strong enough to give some jobs for individuals.
However, I try to avoid taking loans for the business so in the beginning it will be extremely simple..

In the mean time, personally I need to finish my degrees in economics and go to the non-military service since I am a man of peace and I don't want to be involved to military conflicts. This is my personal decision and it is based on the Bible (Matthew 5:9).

For you, my friends, we are living exciting times. The currencies seem to collapse. As I am reading the actions of ECB and FED through the eyes of an economist, I see that this collapse is closer. People will face severe diminish in the purchasing power of their dollars and euros. I predicted before Christmas that Norwegian krona is facing high inflation and now as I am going to shops I see how things have become more expensive (10-15%).

People in Europe tend to consider Norway as a safe-haven. It is true that things are better in Norway than in many other countries. However, people have a lot of loans and when the currency system collapses, those people will suffer the most since they have to pay high interest on their loans due to high inflation.

I thought for a short while that the boom is hitting to Helsinki stock exchange. It is true that interest rates are low. Still, the unemployment rates are rising... An unemployed person should consider other things than a new hair-dressing... Unemployed people consider on surviving.
Banks haven't reported to remarkable losses yet.
However, the credit losses are going to occur... I am watching very interestingly to Switzerland and its massive banking sector... Also here in Scandinavia are countries that have risks in Baltic countries (SEB-bank in Sweden).

However, persoanlly I am reading the Bible more than I have done before. I am getting strength from this book. It helps me to see the things that really matters in the life.

May the Lord Jesus bless you,
- Jarmo

Blog Update 11th of May

It is so beautiful weather outdoor.. Perhaps I will go out soon.

I am planning to start a few blogs on different issues. It will be good in the sense organizing the writings.

At least one blog will be focused on economics, one will be focused on the Bible, and then I have a few more ideas.

However, this blog will be a general one. :)

If you have any wish what kind of things you would like to read, please drop a line or two.

Have a nice 11th of May,

Feelings

It is a sunny day in Kristiansand... I had a nice walk this morning. I love the nature in spring time especially because you really have the contrast between dark period and the bright period.

Personally I am more effective during spring time than during the autumn time.

This time in Norway has been one of the most awesome time I have ever had because I have been able to do things that I never had time before. I have made several business plans, thought the future and studied the Bible.

On the other hand, I am excited to go back to Finland, to feel the smell of Kauppatori (the main square in Helsinki), to see my parents and brother, to spend time in Vaasa, to walk along the sea shore of Vaasa. I am also looking very much forward to "the normal life" in Vaasa: working and studying.

Perhaps I will restart going to church also since it has been so long time when I last time went to church regurarly. The reason for leaving churches is mostly because almost all the churches are not based on the Bible 100 %. There is not even one church (or at least I haven't found it) that has 100 % Biblical teaching. My guideline to find a good church is to compare the teachings with the teachings of the Old testament. The more Jewish is the church, the closer it is to the Apostolical Christianity.

My latest findings

Recently, I have been studying in my spare time the prophecies of the Bible.
I don't want to hurt anybody. This is how I understand the Bible and I am getting to know it more and more as I develop in my new "hobby".

1. The anti-Christ is not a person from eastern Europe speaking English with an accent. The anti-Christ is the pope and the Roman Catholic church as an institution is an institution of the beast.
2. The mark of the beast is not a microchip... Rather it is disobedience towards God's laws. Which one of the commandments is the most broken commandment? The answear: The fourth commandment to keep the Shabbath day holy. Thus, the person who don't keep Shabbath holy has a mark of the beast already because (s)he is disobedient towards God's laws.

Economic Outlook 6th of April 2009 Finland - update + a personal view

It seems that the stock markets are rallying in Helsinki.

The positive things are:
1. Real estates markets have been recovering from fall 2008 slightly (however, usually people buy more real estates in spring than in fall in Northern countries).

2. Interest rates are historicallly low (12 month euribor 1,802 %).

3. Oil price around 45-55 USD/barrels compared with the highs a year ago.

4. Gold has dropped slightly - a sign that some of the investors are more willing to take risk than just a few months ago

However, macro data doesn't seem good. The DEFICIT of Finland's balance of trade was 79 millions euros in January 2009. The unemployment rate is in a rising trend as well.

I would suggest to be careful into getting to stock markets on the days when the indexes are rising 1,5%+.

Major of my investments are still in metals and cash. I do have opened a bearish position that will expire in December 2009.

In order to go back to stock markets I will waite a few more months and look how does the situation look like. Markets are still highly volatile which means that there is no clear trend.

To predict inflation you need to predict the acts of European Central Bank because the money supply is controlled by it. This makes it difficult to predict the future inflation.

Economic Outlook

According to shadowstats.com, M3 money supply (=A broad money) has increased by 50 % from the beginning of 2006 until the beginning of 2009.
Also gold price has risen from 600-650 USD/oz range until the range of 880-950 USD/oz. Gold has been considerent to be an excellent indicator of inflation. (kitco.com)

The total Federal obligations (GAAP) has risen roughly speaking by 10 % between 2007 and 2008, being 65,5 trillions USD in 2008!!!!
Fiscal deficit has risen from 1,2 trillion USD to 5,1 trillion USD in the same time. (Shadowstats.com)

And at the same time, the economic growth is - 4% according to shadowstats.com.

It is obvious, that if the federal debt is 218 300 USD per capita in USA, USA is not supposed to recover from this for long time given the fact that the GDP per capita is only 47 000 USD.
The credit default of USA is not a matter of "If" but rather a matter of "when".

According to the people's bank of China, their USD holdings increased from 1 104 billions of USD to 1 528 billions of USD from January 2007 until December 2007 (www.pbc.gov.cn). (More updated statistics weren't available but the trend is clear).
Thus, the interest of China is a strong and stable dollar.
However, the currency of the economy that is technically speaking broke cannot be strong for long run (not to mention that the FED started to print money and buy bonds straigth form the marketplace).
The monetary politics of FED and fiscal politics of USA is leading to hyperinflation and a total collapse of the dollar in just a few years (ceteris paribus).

Yesterday, on Bloomberg's news was a mention that China is willing to get rid of the dollar and proposes a currency basket (same road that lead to Euro). ( http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aywa1wOFMKmw&refer=home )

Based on these facts, my predictions:

1. Deflation for a short while
2. Hyper inflation for medium long run
3. One world currency for a long run.

Bachelor's thesis

I was in touch with my associate professor and he allowed me to start writing my Bachelor's thesis in June despite the fact that I haven't some of the basic courses and it is not possible to do it in summer time usually. I am going to write probably about gold investments. Kuosmanen (my supervisor) told me that one of the leading professors in Finland in finances argued that gold is not a good investment due to the fact that it has such a huge negative correlation with the stock-markets. According to the portfolio theory the portfolio is better off when having assets that are negatively correlated with each other.

I went to library and borrowed some books that I need to read before starting my process of writing the thesis.

I am really excited about that. :)

I have listed at least four ways to invest in yourself.

1. Education
2. A food with high quality
3. Sports
4. Spirituality (I consider this as a personal matter so I go in my private area when writing about this.)

First and the foremost, the most efficient way of investing in yourself is to study and learn something new. The economic growth is based on the increase of capital, and apparently it is not easy to discover new natural resources so more efficient way is to learn to do things in smarter way than before. That also saves our the most precious resource, time.
Secondly, a food with high quality. When you eat well (in a right way) you feel better. When you feel better, you are satisfied with yourself. When you are satisfied with yourself you treat others better and make more friends and thus become more whole and happier person.
The same thing applies of course to the sports.
The fourth one, spirituality. First I want to say that despite the fact that I have a strong Christian background from my parents, I am doing my own decisions. I don't consider myself as a religous person. Still, behind the ice there is something inside of me that assures: God exists and Jesus is the only way. Despite I try to deny this, I find that for me it is impossible. However, I am a curious and open personality and I have studied some religions but somehow I feel that for me personally, only one of them is above all. The economist that won the Nobel Prize in 2008, Paul Krugman, said in one of his interviews that always listen to a heratic person. Of course, Krugman refered to economics but in my opinion the same thing applies to spirituality as well. The heratic groups usually critizes the mainstream and they have often something new to bring up.
